RECENT INTERVIEW WITH ME

Below is a link to an interview I just did for an online Tattoo zine from Ireland(?), which I believe will be in the next issue of the printed version of their zine. I love doing tattoos and feel very privileged that it's what i do for a living. That being said, I usually try to distance myself from the tattoo community because I find it to be very "clicky", full of name droppers, unoriginality and pretty much like any other "scene" it festers with scenesters. Scenesters in my eyes, act/think/dress according to the parameters of the "scene" they want to fit into. This is fine for some folks (mostly young ones) but doesn't interest me. I have plenty of good friends who are tattooers, but like I said, I prefer to stay away from the community.
At first I had reservations about contributing to the site, but I realized it was a chance for me to say a few things about tattooing that I haven't heard others say before. Things that to me appear to very much out in the open, but that tattooers seem to pretend don't exist.

It's true, I do. Well his movies at least. Fortunately for me the brilliant minds at SOMETHING WEIRD VIDEO have made a documentary about him. I'm so glad it's them that made it, they seem to truly understand HG's movies and I'm confident they know how this documentary should be done. While you're over there buy some shit from them, they definitely deserve your money.
In other HG news, I'm almost ready to release the officially licensed, extremely limited HG Lewis shirt package, just need to get the barf bags finished. VICTORY! Finally got to print these off!

There's been a lot of obstacles, but now everything is running smoothly. I printed these myself (yes that's my kitchen in the photo) and made about 16. They will be for sale when Y-PESTIS.COM is up and running, which will be very soon I promise! If these sell I'll re print some more, also, next up is a print of a design I did for one of my all time favorite bands, the HOOKERS! I have the screen all ready to go, it's just a matter of time. That one will look like this...

Since I'm printing these myself I'll be able to keep the price pretty low, not sure of the exact total yet, but like I said, it won't be anything crazy. A huge thanks to Hemlock Ink in Somerville for helping me out with the screens, those guys are great and really professional. Check them out HERE.

Haven't posted in about a week or so, here's what's been happening...
I went to my good friend Coco Roy's art opening in Jamaica Plain.

The bathroom at this place blew my mind, I think there was a mummified cat behind the toilet.

Monday- Had breakfast (see below) with my buddy Chad Chesko (http://www.myspace.com/chadchesko) who is currently tattooing me from my collar bones to my hips, which feels more like, what I like to call, a "living autopsy" than an actual tattoo.

...and got a copy of SHE BEAST on VHS (clamshell, Gorgon Video).

Lastly, here's a bunch of sketches that I've been working on...

Did this one the other day, just got all the black in, colors next.

Saw this thing at a thrift store type place, what caught my eye more that anything was the "FTW 666" patch. Either FTW, or 666 alone are a doosey, but together, that's somethin else. I would have bought the whole vest for that one patch, but it was $65. Maybe they peeled it off some dead biker or something. Plus check out that crazy dragon.

Not really a fan of Vice magazine, but I dug up this oldie from their website, about the shirt I drew for MIDNIGHT. Some parts are funny.

NEW YORK - CAN'T STOP THE VOMIT

Sometimes art and poetry can align in magical, unanticipated ways. Occasionally, the triumphs of human expression can surpass your wildest fantasies and touch on every sensory nerve ending in total bliss. When this genius phenomenon stimulates all the prime faculties at once, its basically like a giant pentagram illuminated by purple fire on your freaking face. Its like three corners of the hot pink neon triangle of sight, sound, and touch have been galvanized with lasers and the head and heart just violently explode from the forces of beautiful truth. This beautiful truth is the perfect synthesis of piquant imagery and verse’s supreme mastership. Usually, this matrimony of imagery and word is crypted in galleries for folks to admire from safe distances. But, this time, you can say fuck off to that gallery shit and roll like an advanced professor of the poetic arts with this masterwork on your tits. Behold! It is NOW Midnight!

First of all, this font is flawless! It’s human. I can feel that fist gripped around the blackest sharpie digging out the best slash to make that G! Not to mention the awesome as fuck letter D and the slightly upside down crossed T. This is simple, direct and perfect craftsmanship of lettering. Bathroom wall style. Perfect!

Second, we have a super sexy demon-witch-temptress with dragon wings punctuated with talons, huge boobs, agape skeleton face in a summoning, half-curtsy gesticulation stance from inside a scaldy, steaming cauldron atop a red reversed pentagram! Awesome, fierce, and feminist! I am so happy she has pubic hair. I'm going to assume the artist is male because of the boob rendering being slightly on the fantastic size, but the shading for pubic hair tells me he has been to that nice place before. Plus, her hips, waist, and flowy hair are all sexy too. She also sorta has wispy bangs like Mischa Barton. Cute.

So, after all that kickin’ bunz art and delinquent font—which are inspirational and harmonious in every way imaginable—plus a little erotic wicked shit, we have the word “midnight.” It is always scary, even when uttered by the tiniest child or oldest of old ladies, and completely melds sex and evil into one abstract generalization for being up to no good. You know that is what we want here! It just gets better. This beautiful masterpiece now also becomes poetry when you exit the room and flash the back of this t-shirt. This is the most perfectly sweet precise refrain for an extra awesome fun-ass, awesome as fuck good time. How could anyone even possibly argue that if you can’t stop the vomit you are absolutely having the best friggin’ time of your garsh derned life? Way better than can’t stop the blood. Totally better than can’t stop the poopy. Remarkably smarter than can’t stop the pus. Profoundly surpasses can’t stop the drool. Although wait, drooling is totally fun.

ABSURD REVIEW, CDF INTRO, ASYLUM OF SATAN

As I mentioned earlier, here's the intro I did for my section of Paper Machete zine, and a review for the movie ABSURD. All graphics by me, click on the images for a bigger version.

Watched this one last night. For me, the quality of William Girdler movies is up there with Al Adamson, Ted V. Mikels, and even HG lewis. These movies are a raw glimpse into America during the 60's and heavy 70's. Accidentally stylistic and as unhomoginized as it got back then. The only thing that upset me about Asylum Of Satan was that the "love interest" from Three On A Meathook plays the blind chick in this movie. Her acting makes me want to hammer a nail into my hand, and that's saying something coming from me. Anyways, awesome movie.

DVD SCORES, ALUCARDA REVIEW, IN PROGRESS TATTOO

These suckers were waiting for me when I got home from work today, along with some hooks and hammers for the NWN project, ha!

Here's a review I did a few months ago for my friend J Rodricks zine "PAPER MACHETE". I don't know if or when it's coming out, so I figured I'd ruin the surprise and post it here for now. I also did a review for ABSURD, which is another awesome movie, and an intro for my section of the zine where I get all misty eyed about Creature Double Feature, which was the local monster movie show here in Boston when I was a kid. All graphics on those pages are also done by me, click on the picture for a version that's readable to human eyeballs.

While I'm at it, here's a tattoo I've been working on, still in progress...

SO SWEET SO DEAD!

What an awesome movie. I scored a boot of the Japanese version, which I assume means uncut violence, but also means blurred out women's pubes. That kind of censoring seems like the ideal conditions for breeding insane, sexually frustrated, blood thirsty maniacs, but who am I to say. Anyways, got to watch this one while I drew and ate breakfast this morning, classic Giallo recipe here. Totally stylized, tons or red herrings, happenin soundtrack, and the killer is super cool looking. Imagine Rorschach from Watchmen if you dipped him in black ink. If you can, track this one down, pretty sure there isn't an official American DVD version in print, but boots are fairly easy to find in the usual places on the internet.

PRELIMINARY SKETCHES FOR NEW NWN PROJECT

Here's the sketches I sent Yosuke from Nuclear War Now Prod. I don't want to give too much away about this one, but I will say this, the image will be for an album I'm very excited about, and fans of the releases on NWN will be as well. Also, I'll be doing a logo for the band. Oh yeah, this is going to be a photo, rather than an illustration, so it will be something new for me. It's gonna involve a skinned goat head, cow entrails, some meat hooks, blood, teeth, bones, allot of candles, and some of my hair, ha! That's quite a grocery list, I'm sure I'll have some interesting stories about shopping for this stuff. I'll post more about the project as time goes on.

I'm a little late on posting this one, but better late than never! He will be sadly missed by millions of people that never even met him, that's quite an accomplishment! Weirdly enough I was reading the last issue of DEEP RED, and GORE SCORE during the last week of December.

I'm gonna post some things I'm working on for my distro company YERSINIA PESTIS here in the future. I figured I should put up a description of what the hell YP actually is, just for the record, because it's a little different than other distros. Heres the spiel I wrote directly for the site, which is up now, but doesn't have any content yet.
Yersinia Pestis Distribution is an independent underground
company, based out of the U.S.,that was created in the Fall of 2009.
Originally my idea was to have an
outlet for whatever kind of illustration, print, t-shirt design, or
anything else I wanted to create and make a product from, without any
constraints put on me by an outside client. One of my earliest
inspirations as an aspiring "artist", was album and t-shirt art, and
though I wanted to continue making illustrations for bands, I also
wanted to give myself a little more freedom. So, eventually I fused
the two ideas, I could still illustrate for bands, but if the band was
willing, perhaps I could make a small run of shirts or prints of the
image I made for them, and package it however I please, including
extras (pin/badge, printed patch, poster, print, etc.) and/or
elaborate packaging. All of this, of corse, with the permission of the
band. My next goal was to figure out a way I could collaborate with
other artists whose work I admire, I contacted a few who I was
familiar with, and basically formed the idea from there. By
commissioning others to do shirts and prints for Yersinia Pestis, I
feel the Distro can reach a wider audience, I'll get to work with
people whose efforts I admire, and hopefully, by giving the artists
one hundred percent freedom with the image and final product, they
will be contributing some of their best work. For the most part I'm
only interested in collaborating with people who are proud of their
place in the underground, and have no desire to "make it big" by
working with large record labels, or corporate companies that will put
whatever is currently "in" on anything that is marketable to the
m(-)asses (overpriced sneakers, t-shirts, hooded sweatshirts, etc).
The prices of products from Y-Pestis will directly reflect the cost of
payment to the artist for their time, and cost of printing/creating
the final product. Any profit made from sales, will go back into
making more product. Anyone who joins the mailing list will not only
be informed of newly released items, but also will be given the
opportunity to buy special "mailing list only" items that wont be
publicly available on the site, and may also receive a random free
package, again, only if you sign up for the mailing list. To sign up,

"subscribe". The same goes for all other inquiries, and please
remember, Y-Pestis is not a printing service, I get my products made
through local independent printing companies. I appreciate your

Watched this one today while I had breakfast and drew some stuff before work. It's one of those movies that's eluded me for a long part of my movie watching career, but I got a cool boot of it thanks to http://www.weirdorecords.com . Buy shit from them! They are a fairly new store in Cambridge, a place that had a ton of underground record/video stores when I was a kid, but now has almost none.
